India is fast moving towards 100% digital banking and steps like limited number of cash transactions per month per bank account, lower debit and credit card charges, more secure online banking, easy mobile banking, and banking with the help of mobile apps are helping to achieve this goal.
Payments through bank cheques are also cashless transactions and it is there for ages however, the use of cheques for payments has increased drastically in India in the past 6 to 10 months. If you have received a cheque payment from someone and want to deposit it in your bank then you have to enter details on your bank’s cheque deposit slip.
Information like cheque number, date, the cheque is from which bank, branch and of what amount are required to fill in. If you are wondering how to find cheque number in SBI, HDFC, ICICI & Axis Bank Cheques then this article is just for you.
Here we are going to tell you how to find cheque number on different bank cheques. The format is almost the same irrespective of the issuer banks in India. The cheque is mainly divided into three parts –
#1. Header or Logo:
Every cheque has the bank logo printed at the top left-hand corner. Along with this, you may find some other details related to the bank or general cheque instructions.
#2. Payee and Payor (Payer) Details:
The second part of the cheque contains payee and payor details along with the cheque date. This part starts with payee details like ‘Pay‘ where one has to write account holder name to whom the cheque is paid to, ‘Rupees‘ here one has to mention the cheque amount in words to be paid to the payee.
There is a box at the right-hand side of the ‘Rupees‘ section where one has to write the cheque amount in numbers then the account number of the payor followed by the payor signature. Remember that overwriting is not allowed while filling up any cheque so one has to be very careful while writing information on these cheques.
#3. Numeric Numbers Printed:
The third part of the cheque is at the bottom of the cheque where the numbers are printed. The first “6 digits represent a cheque number” which is the unique identification number of any cheque (look at below first 6 digits on the image of SBI cheque).
The cheque number is followed by 9 digits MICR number. Every three digits of this MICR code respectively represent city code, bank code, and branch code. After the MICR number, there is a portion of the payor account number followed by the transaction ID.
By going through these three points, now you are familiar with the cheque format which is almost the same for every bank in India. Be it SBI, HDFC, ICICI, or Axis Bank cheques, you have to look at the bottom of the cheque. On the left-hand side, the first 6 digits at the bottom is the cheque number followed by 9 digits MICR code, a portion of the account number of the payor, and transaction ID.
So next time when anyone asks you about you have the number answer ready for that.
